24. January 2023

The Popakademie Baden-Württemberg presents the results of the Music Camps that took place in Windhoek in cooperation with the College of the Arts (COTA), the University of Namibia (UNAM), the Goethe-Institut Namibia and the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. On Tuesday, January 24, 2023, a public premiere of the resulting documentary film will take place at the Popakademie at 5:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion on the Namibia Music Camp.

On Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at 5:30 pm, a public screening of the documentary film made during the Namibia Music Camps will take place at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg. The film documents the work of the participants during the camp and gives an insight into the music scene in Namibia. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Prof. Udo Dahmen and other participants of the coaching team.

The first Namibia Music Camp took place from March 14th to 19th 2022 and the second from November 28th to December 3rd 2022. During the camps the participants worked together in different bands and a large songwriting team to write, rehearse and record their own songs. Each group was coached and mentored by lecturers from the Pop Academy, COTA and UNAM as well as experienced Namibian musicians. There were daily body percussion sessions, music business workshops and talks with Namibian artists such as Lioness and Jackson Wahengo.

The results of the week were first presented at a small concert for invited guests at the Goethe-Institut Namibia. The final public concert took place one day later at the National Theater of Namibia, where the entire program was performed again in front of about 350 guests. The television station NBC reported on the concert.

It is planned to hold the Music Camp again in the future to further promote the exchange between Namibian and German musicians.

"We would like to thank our cooperation partners, the College of the Arts, the University of Namibia, the Goethe-Institut Namibia and the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg for the successful cooperation as well as the Namibia Initiative of the State of Baden-Württemberg for their support. The Music Camp was an unforgettable experience for all involved and we look forward to carrying out further projects in Namibia in the future," says Prof. Udo Dahmen, Artistic Director and Managing Director of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.
