CEO of BMG Hartwig Masuch guest at the Open House talk

On January 28, Hartwig Masuch, CEO of BMG, was a guest at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim. During an Open House talk with Prof. Hubert Wandjo, Managing Director of the Popakademie, he spoke about current issues in the music industry.Due to the latest discussions in the German music industry, the main focus was on the topics of streaming and the distribution of revenues in this booming segment. Masuch reiterated his view that the switch from physical to streaming will inevitably entail changes in the industry's compensation model, affecting both the relative compensation of songwriters and artists and the share that labels retain for their services.Masuch emphasized that streaming platforms are not used in the same way by different target groups, and that therefore not every stream should be valued equally. Thus he again supported the demands for a user-centered remuneration system for streaming providers. With regard to the future of the music industry, he emphasized the growing power of management, which in his opinion will increase in importance and influence and become the decisive players in the music market.
Hartwig Masuch has already been lecturing at the Pop Academy in the past, together with Fred Casimir, Executive Vice President International Repertoire BMG. With Frank Ströbele, Senior Vice President Global Recordings Marketing Europe, BMG even has a professor from the Pop Academy in its ranks. Numerous graduates of the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences now work in key positions at BMG, including Maximilian Kolb as Managing Director GSA and Christopher Ludwig as Director Digital Strategy.
