Whitepaper Generative AI in the Music Business

Popakademie and YouTube publish white paper

30. October 2024

YouTube supports the second edition of the white paper on “Generative AI in the music business” from the “Popakademie Digital” white paper series. The author is David Stammer, Project Manager Digital Innovation at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg and responsible for the Future Music Camp.

“The white paper provides a valuable basis for the discussion about the opportunities and challenges of AI in the music business. For us at YouTube and Google, innovation and responsibility go hand in hand. We are convinced that generative AI can unleash new creative potential. At the same time, it is important to define the framework for the use of AI in constant dialog with the industry.” Kiki Ganzemüller, EMEA Music Partnerships Manager, Google.

"The white paper is focused on the task of systematically categorizing and illuminating the diverse effects of generative AI on the music industry. Artificial intelligence not only enables new forms of music production, but also changes how music is marketed. This is accompanied by numerous legal and ethical issues that need to be discussed,” says David Stammer, Project Manager Digital Innovation.

The second edition of this white paper was supported by YouTube. It includes and supplements new developments in the field of AI and the music business in the period from December 2023 to June 2024, translations into English and French, and a new layout. The first edition of the white paper in German was published in December 2023.On the one hand, it consisted of a summary of the contents of the Future Music Camp, the conference for innovations and future topics in the music industry at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.The Future Music Camp took place on May 25 & 26, 2023 under the main topic “Creative Artificial Intelligence in the Music Business”.
On the other hand, it is based on the findings of two student projects in the SMIX.LAB (Digital Competence Center of the Popakademie) 2023, which evaluated AI tools for music generation, content creation and process optimization in marketing.
