Start-up Groovecat receives award

26. February 2019

The start-up groovecat of the three Music and Creative Industries graduates Jakob Höflich, Markus Schwarzer and Joshua Weikert now bears the title Kultur- und Kreativpilot 2018. The award was presented by federal minister Peter Altmaier at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy on Wednesday evening, 21 February, to 32 entrepreneurs from the cultural and creative industries. These are entrepreneurs who have innovative concepts and ideas in areas such as sustainability, new work or big data.

Groovecat is an app for musical storytelling and was launched in August 2018. The photos and videos taken by users in the app are directly underlaid with the music currently playing in streaming apps or the environment. The personal soundtrack of life created in this way can be shared directly with friends via social media, which automatically generates plays for artists and labels. The start-up is financed by the Beteiligungsfonds Wirtschaftsförderung Mannheim GmbH, which supports technology-oriented and creative start-ups with venture capital, and Business Angel Dr. Andrea Kranzer. Groovecat is also supported by the Mannheim Start-up Support Fund.

Jakob, Joshua and Markus got to know each other in 2016 during their master's degree in Music and Creative Industries at the Popakademie. During the project workshop, the three developed the first idea for their tech app and laid the foundation for their start-up. The founding team has already won the competition BW goes Mobile of the Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg, participated in the worldwide unique Music WorX Accelerator and was on stage at the South by Southwest (SXSW), the world's biggest music fair, and the Reeperbahn Festival.
